Friday Cat Blogging, and then some

Posted in Friday Cat Blogging at 3:00

From the back of the house, a chipmunk kept barking. I took the 6-month-old camcorder outside to try to find out why. All I saw was a cottontail rabbit, and I pointed the camera at it, although it wouldn’t move, which made for uneventful video.

I faded out on the rabbit and hit the Stop button. Just then, from the corner of my eye I saw something small running into our yard, and I pointed the camera at it and hit Record.

A few seconds after Kelly entered our yard and our lives.

He made his way into our garden, and gave us a lean and hungry look before chewing on some rye grass.

A lean and hungry look.

Although he had no collar and obviously had not eaten well for some time, he was a friendly fellow, as though he had been someone’s pet.

'Kinda thin,' I said on the videotape, 'Kinda thin.'.

We gave him leftover grilled chicken and milk diluted with water, and he devoured them. Next, he went to the back screen door and stood there, wanting to go inside. Curious, perhaps. And perhaps he wanted a home and was starting the process of adopting us.

Here at the back door. He wanted to go inside. He wanted a home.

We didn’t let him in that first day, and a couple of hours later, he disappeared. The next morning, he was back again, and I was glad to see him.

Pat and I had both worked as temps when we moved here in the late 1980’s, so maybe it wasn’t surprising when I began trying to come up with a name for him that this cat’s comings and goings reminded me of those days. It was as though we’d phoned a temp agency and asked them to send over a cat for the day. I began to call him our Kelly Temp Cat.

You can guess the rest. Ten years and lots of good food later, here he is, our Kelly Cat, who thanks to the Internet is known around the world as a Good Cat.

Ginger The Cat has a blog where she’s happy to hold forth on any number of topics of interest to her. That is, as long as it’s not naptime.

You become.

A Bittersweet Realization

Posted in Good Food at 0:23

Since you asked (or even if you didn’t), Sunday dinner came off all right.

Well, at one point I drove to the nearest supermarket to buy another box of San Giorgio shells, because the first box stuck to the bottom of the pot.

But after we fixed that, the stuffed shells and the chocolate crumb bars made for a tasty Sunday dinner.

One thing about the chocolate crumb bars: the recipe came from VeryBestBaking.com, which accounts for the recommendations of Nestlé products like Toll House Morsels. I happily use Toll House Morsels to make Toll House cookies but for this recipe I wanted Ghirardelli Double Chocolate chips. But at Wegman’s, down in the baking aisle the label bore the bad news: “Our new, improved formulation for 60% Cocoa Bittersweet Chocolate Chips (formerly Double Chocolate)…”

Dunno how much cocoa was in the Double Chocolate chips, but according to the labels of the 2 products, the change in formulation consists of more sugar and less fat. There was still a half-bag of Double Chocolate in the pantry, so with Pat’s help I tried a blind taste test. In one trial, the subject was able to tell which was which without guessing.

I used the new ones in the chocolate crumb bars, and they taste fine. Not the same as Double Chocolate, but they’ll have to do. *Shrug.* I might even switch back next time and use Toll House Morsels.

Curse you, Ghirardelli…

Bon Mot

I’ve heard this linked quote many times, usually substituting “cat” for “dog”, but until now I never knew who said it first.

Got a minute?

Sheltered and Safe

Katrina did so much damage that any piece of good news is welcome. Two cats were reluctantly left behind in a New Orleans house after their owner was evacuated to a Navy base that wouldn’t take pets, but the owner wouldn’t stop trying to save them.

She found the help she needed, and now those 2 cats, named Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra, are back with their human.
