What Lizzie Wants…

Posted in Cats at 19:55

If you’ve dropped by from over at "What a Good Cat!", welcome in. And as long as you’re here, feel free to look around at the rest of the blog…

Lizzie patiently waits, then pounces on the prize she craves.

One evening at supper, Lizzie walked into the kitchen and lay down near Pat and me. We thought it was nice of her to keep us company while we ate.

At the end of the meal, I got up to clear the table, and that’s when we learned her real reason for joining us. Before I was halfway across the room, Lizzie had leaped into my warm chair and made herself comfortable.

Feline Groovy, Indeed

Things I’m looking forward to: it’s only a few more weeks until spring, and just before that, Donald Fagen’s Morph the Cat will be released. Samples of the disc, including the complete first 3 tracks, are up now at donaldfagen.com.

Is It Here Yet? (And if not, why not?)

The blog authored by Manitoba resident Simply Coll has a photo that tells a good story.

And the story depends on how you see the picture. Me, I’m seeing all kinds of things: yes, the impatience at the cold conditions of Manitoba winter implied in the title of the post, but it’s not a stretch to see in Bear’s perfectly arranged seated position a calm acceptance of the world as it is. Or maybe, looking out on snow and reminiscing about younger days when a harsh environment was the best a cat could do.

OK, OK, we know cats don’t get that deep (do they?) and I know my imagination’s gone off the deep end on this cold February night — but all the possibilities implied in the photo make it my idea of a good picture.

Cats Sawing Wood

When I left Kelly in the family room, he was sprawled across the love seat, snoring mightily. Then I got upstairs and sat down at the PC and read about how Miles snores, too. Besides that, he shows his tummy when sleeping, and if he loves tummy rubs too then he’s Kelly Cat’s spiritual brother.

Wildlife At Work

Posted in This, that and the other at 16:07

Pat + I moved to Pennsylvania in 1987, and there have been many changes in the area since then. The company where I work has its headquarters in a part of the county that used to be rural, but in recent years suburban sprawl has surrounded it with homes and highways. At company headquarters, buildings are spread out with enough non-developed green space in between that it resembles a traditional college campus, and in fact employees refer to it as “Main Campus.”

From my cubicle, I can look across the hall and see through the window a little bit of another part of this building, which is rectangular and encloses a small courtyard. This afternoon, a redtailed hawk landed in just that area of sight, on top of the building across the courtyard.

Redtails have adapted to the changes in our area along with other animals; on campus, mallards and Canada geese can be found on the wide open grassy softball field, and near the buildings where trees stand, squirrels and chipmunks are common sights.

And that’s what this predator was looking for. After a few moments, the redtail glided down into the courtyard and coasted around the small trees before landing on a 1st-floor windowsill. I walked up the hall to find another window with a better angle on the bird, but by the time I found one, it had flown again. Here’s hoping it found a meal. It certainly brightened my afternoon.

February Tulips

Posted in This, that and the other at 21:59

Over at Diva Kitty and the Fluffies there’s a picture of a pot of pink tulips. Apparently it’s warmer there than it is around here. Nice to see that Spring’s not far away…
