Shock and Awww…

Posted in Cats, This, that and the other at 17:30

The shock: while putting my pants on this morning, I felt a stretchy kind of pop in the lower right portion of my back, followed by sharp pain that reminded me of the time the dentist’s assistant accidentally hit a nerve while cleaning my teeth.

In other words, it hurt. A lot.

An awful lot.

Flat on my back, I phoned the office and explained the situation. After taking one Skelaxin (left over from Pat’s bad back last November) followed by a Skelaxin-induced nap, I went to the doctor and got a prescription for some other muscle relaxer, whose name escapes me now. The doctor had me move around a bit and said the problem was muscular, not in the spine, and should get better sooner rather than later.

The awwww….: Nicky is very devoted to Pat, bonding with her after we adopted him as a very young kitten. Pat had to take care of me as well as her usual weekday responsibilities of granddaughter Diana and the Good Cats, so by the time Jack picked up Diana after work, my sweetie was pretty worn out. She told me she went upstairs and lay down on the bed, and immediately Nicky jumped off the cat tree and joined her on the bed, making “Mmrrrp” sounds that sounded to her as though he was asking, “Are you all right, mama?”

Caitie, Rest and Motion

Posted in Cats at 20:04

Late afternoon sun let little Caitie cast a long shadow on the driveway.

Out-of-the-ordinary schedule today at work, so I couldn’t come home for lunch the way I usually do. As a result, the Good Cats were sorely disappointed at having to stay inside all day, but when I got home, Pat and I immediately corrected that injustice. Caitie in particular took advantage of the opportunity to stretch her legs.

Feline Hepatic Lipidosis

Posted in Cats at 7:46

Pat’s sister Joyce was out for a visit not long ago, and one evening she was flipping through the many cable channels and landed on a channel showing the movie “Harry and Tonto.”

Harry is played by Art Carney and Tonto is played by a lean young orange cat. The cat looks young to me anyway, but for the purposes of the movie he’s supposed to be old like Carney’s character. Harry says at one point that Tonto is 11, or 77 in human years. (Not true, although conversion tables vary.)

Later Harry has a scene where he visits Tonto in the hospital, and when I saw that handsome cat lying there very still, I had to remind myself “It’s only a movie, it’s only a movie…”

But this morning I learned about a real disease called Hepatic Lipidosis that affects overweight cats. It sounds scary, and it’s no movie. Here’s more info.

I need to get Kelly (and to a lesser extent Lizzie) moving more and eating less.

Which wouldn’t be a bad idea for me, either…

Friday Cat Blogging: Lizzie

Posted in Cats, Friday Cat Blogging at 22:03

Lizzie, March 7 2006

It looks as though Lizzie is posing for some kind of poster or maybe a statue. “A cat with Vision,” is what it says to me. “A cat looking confidently into the future.”

What I really think it was was a hungry cat looking over at the pear tree at a couple of juncos.

In fact, though, Lizzie isn’t the best hunter of our Good Cats — Caitie is. Read about her skills, as well as what Lizzie does best, in this week’s “What a Good Cat!”

Black, Green and Pink

Posted in Cats at 12:38

Nicky has found a little patch of green grass and is nibbling away, with an occasional break to lick his chops.

I Said, “It’s Spring!”

Posted in This, that and the other at 12:30

Around here, it’s still colder that it should be, considering it’s the first full day of spring. Still, the sun’s out and the pear tree is budding, so we know it won’t be cold for much longer…
