A Satisfied Customer

Posted in This, that and the other at 18:14

Comment spam was a problem here for a little while, until a tip from Coll’s Corner helped me by recommending Akismet.

In the last couple of days, the bottom-feeders behind trackback spam discovered this quiet corner of cyberspace, and this morning I deleted 54 of those little honeys from 54 separate posts. One by one by one. No fun.

I shut off trackbacks until a quick check of Google turned up a defense for WordPress users.

Then, when I went to install it, the FTP program timed out. Email didn’t work either, so I quickly went to the site of the company that provides the web hosting for “What a Good Cat!”, 3 Good Cats, and It’s all Good.

Now, my web host is a good one, because I almost never know it’s there. They have trouble that affects me briefly maybe once a year, and they bill me once a year. The rest of the time, I forget I’m their customer, the way it should be.

Right there in bright green at the top of the page was a link to their server status, and on the server status page was a message advising that indeed, my server and a few others had been having problems during the day, but that they were working on the repair.

Minutes later, it was back up, and I uploaded the Rice University plug-in and activated it. Crises averted. Happy again!

(Now, gotta run — need to mow the lawn and do some trimming tonight…)

A visit to the WordPress forum seems to indicate that there is an abundance of new spam these days. I too have turned off my trackbacks.. at least for now. Thanks for the link.. I will check out this plug-in.

We started getting some comment spam, but when we turned on the thing where you have to type in the word before commenting, all the spam stopped.

I’m relatively new to blogging. Is there a way to delete all the spam trackbacks in one fell swoop? (hoping so..)

Could someone enlighten me on how to “..turn on the thing where you have to type in the word before commenting..” as quoted from Fat Eric’s comment?

And also, do I have the power to simply “…turn off trackbacks..”, as indicated in Simple Coll’s comment?

    Would appreciate any help!
