To shut down the computer, press “Start”…

Summer vacation! Never too old to get excited by those sweet words. Pat and I are powering down the PC’s and going outside to play for awhile.

We’ll talk to you later…

August 16 update: we’ve enjoyed ourselves the last couple of months, and right after Labor Day we’ll start to report on “How We Spent Our Summer Vacation”. You’re invited to come on back and look over the Good stuff here beginning September 5.

Empty Nest

Posted in Cats, This, that and the other at 21:58

Here’s the spot in our back yard where the cottontail was working in the rain a couple of days ago. I was hoping to find more, but perhaps the doe realized that when it’s not raining, our back yard is full of potential predators. Even if those cats are closely supervised when they go outside, the rabbit doesn’t know that. No dumb bunny here…

Update: Still an empty nest, with no baby bunnies yet. We still see a few rabbits hopping around the neighborhood, so I’m not giving up hope.

Sweet Little Oreo

Oreo the cat (NOT the cookie) is having a big birthday party, but has also taken time to feature other feline friends who are also celebrating soon. Happy birthday and purrthday to all, and to all plenty of love, affection and of course stinky goodness…

Jack, Do It Again

Posted in Cats at 13:51

There are bears living in New Jersey. There are territorial cats everywhere, but unfortunately for one bear, Jack the cat, a mighty territorial orange cat, also lives in New Jersey. Result: one bear up a tree with a hacked-off Jack at the bottom. When the bear came down, Jack chased it up another tree.

Some days, you get the bear…

Bunny Eggs?!

Posted in This, that and the other at 0:05

We had a lot of dandelions in the back yard this spring, probably the most ever in 8 years in this house. I’ve read that one natural defense is to cut the lawn higher than I’m used to cutting it. They say that the higher the grass, the healthier, and the healthier, the more it can defend itself against weed invasion.

So the mower was set at its highest level when I mowed yesterday afternoon. This afternoon, I got home from work and saw a rabbit in the back yard. Nothing unusual there. Except this rabbit was pulling up green stuff from around the yard and bringing mouthfuls of it back to one spot. I didn’t go outside because it was raining, but it sure looks like this Eastern Cottontail is building a nest…

Several years ago, a killdeer laid eggs in our back yard and we had to keep the cats away until they hatched, so if the rabbit does lay its bunny eggs in this new nest, well, this won’t be exactly a new experience. Anyway, stay tuned…

Caitie-Belle-the-Cat’s 9th Gotcha Day

Posted in Cats at 0:05

June 7, 1997, an adoption day at the area Petco, sponsored by a rescue organization called Good Mews. Lots of kittens, and a quiet calico cat with gooseberry green eyes, beautiful markings, and — as we learned later — a great deal of energy. Nine years later, she still does…
