Purrthday Wishes to the Big Piney Woods

Posted in Cats, This, that and the other at 13:22

Only a few months ago, a beautiful lady cat joined the family at the Calico Girls, and now Precious Flower, as she’s been named, is celebrating her 1st birthday. Happy Purrthday, Precious, and many more from all the Good Cats!

3 Good Dots, or Out of My Head on Saturday Moanin’…

Posted in Cats, This, that and the other at 12:58

– Posting this a little later than usual, because… well, let me explain. First, I was fiddling around with Kubuntu Linux last night, so I went to bed late. Verdict so far — it’s not going well. After cutting my teeth on DOS way back when, I’m not afraid of the command line, but there’s a learning curve to this language. With so much else to do these days, this may not be the time to start something complicated…

– Then Pat + I went shopping early before the stores get overrun. As it was, the parking lot was filling up already when we got there. When we returned home, the Good Cats demanded that we take them out immediately, at once, this instant. What else could we do? It was either take them out or be torn to shreds…

– Here it is, December 16, less than a week from the first day of winter, and a few minutes ago Pat hung the sheets outside to dry… mid-50’s temperatures and sunny skies… it’s cool in all senses of the word. I’m not dreaming of a white anything right now…

– Next Tuesday is the 22nd anniversary of our first date… kind of the Gotcha Day for Pat and me… I did a lot of dumb stuff when I was young, but one thing I got right was falling in love with Pat… and one good decision that helped lead to that was to remember something Sydney Harris wrote years before… it was something like, People too often go out looking to marry the right person instead of making themselves the kind of person the right person would want to marry… And here are some other intelligent things Sydney Harris wrote…

– The 19th is also the day my sister Sandy is scheduled for her operation to remove the growth from her ovary. It’s been rescheduled twice already due to conflicts with the hospital system and Sandy’s insurance company. Fingers crossed that this time everything goes through as planned with no unpleasant surprises…

– You Thought Your Commute Was Bad Dep’t.: Dark Roasted Blend has overhead photos of incomprehensible intersections and Malfunction Junctions.

– Looks like some tuxedo kitty doesn’t like to share…

– Do The Due Diligence Dep’t: Linksys changed the model number of their Linux-based wireless router from WRT54G to WRT54GL, and by all accounts put a cheaper inferior thing in the WRT54G box. The problem is that a lot of reviews on the web say the WRT54G is a swell router, and I wonder how many folks bought the lesser one based on that outdated info… fortunately, there’s other info out there, such as the comments on the Amazon link above, that sets things straight…

– Love those 2-for-1 coupons at Cold Stone Creamery. Last night, Pat got Berry Berry Berry Good, and I got Banana Caramel Crunch…

– There’s a new product out called “YORK Premier Baking Pieces Mini Peppermint Patties.” So far, we haven’t baked anything with them because they’re so tasty straight from the bag. No link here, because as far as I can tell, there’s no link anywhere else. Not even at Hershey’s site, and they make the things…

– Pat’s done with her Christmas cards, and I haven’t started mine yet. My one excuse is that I did put together the little holiday-themed video you’ll see here next Monday… but now that it’s finished, I gotta get started on the cards… so I’ll talk to you later…

3 Good Links Thursday

Posted in This, that and the other at 0:05

One Good Cat Link: The saying goes, “It’s better to want what you don’t have than have what you don’t want.” 101 Reasons to Dump Your Man and Get a Cat is for those who are in the latter situation.

One Video Link: If you’re like me, Christmas season starts way too soon for you. When Christmas displays are in stores right next to Halloween displays, that’s just wrong.

But now, it’s OK to break out the good stuff, the definitive versions of Christmas songs: Bing singing “White Christmas” and “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” Judy Garland and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, Perry Como, Burl Ives, Johnny Mathis… and today, Nat King Cole singing “The Christmas Song.”

One Other Link: Next Monday’s home video was inspired by the Christmas e-cards available on the web. The piano music on the video comes from a man named Bill Cushman, whose site is called Ghost Notes.

Coincidence, or Great Minds Think Alike?

Posted in Cats, This, that and the other at 23:55

I took this photo of Nicky in January of this year.

Tonight, while looking for something else, I found this picture, which was taken in May 2004 by a photographer named Ian Smith.

Good things: the old barn down the road

Posted in The Good things in life at 0:05

I can see this barn while sitting at the computer in the office upstairs at home. Everywhere else within sight are houses, but it’s good to have a view of a cornfield and a barn without leaving the house.
