Penguin Powerless
After learning about yet another zero-day exploit against some piece of Microsoft software, I began to look into Linux. Books, magazines and websites assured me that any difficulties installing and using Linux would be minor, and that I’d grow to love the penguin-powered PC.
I probably would, if only I could get Linux to work. All the Live CD’s I tried went belly-up on me. Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Fedora Core, SUSE, I don’t remember them all, but none of them went anywhere. So, since it’ll take more time than I have right now to study and learn more about it, Linux will have to wait.
It makes me feel better to learn today that someone with pro-level computer skills also had trouble getting Linux to work.

The Penguin-Powered OS will definitely give you a new outlook on things! I would recommend Fedora. It has a nice GUI and supports most hardware. I dabbled around with it a couple of years back but didn’t stick with it for too long.

I used various distro’s of Linux off and on for several years, although I’ve used Windoze for the last couple for various (non-technical) reasons.
If you want to get away from Micro$oft, I suggest you take a look at Linspire [http://www.linspire.com] and/or the Freespire [http://freespire.org/] cousin. Supposedly they were designed match the existing Windows interface as much as possible.
Word of warning — I’ve never used them, so move slowly, on a spare machine if such be available.
