Thursday night, we put 4 new tires on the minivan at Sam’s Club, and while we were there, Pat also picked out a cat bed. She placed it on the floor when we got back home, and first Nicky approached it, sniffing it warily. Then Kelly stepped forward, pushed past the hesitant black cat, and put his two front paws inside the bed. After several seconds of kneading the fleece bottom, Kelly finished staking his claim, curling up inside (with only a bit of overhang) and closing his eyes.

Hello again, world… back on a limited schedule for now…
Wanted to do a quick post about this: late this afternoon, I stopped in at the Petco in Old Bridge, NJ, where a rescue organization called S.A.R.A. Inc. was holding an adoption day. All the available cats looked to me like Good Cats. I especially fell hard for one of them, a big mellow guy named Sully, and wished there were room for one more Good Cat at our house. (If you have room in your heart and your home for Sully, S.A.R.A. would love to hear from you.)
I enjoyed talking about cats with the members of S.A.R.A., who were all friendly and enthusiastic. It must be hard for any member of a rescue organization to keep that enthusiasm when there are always more cats to help than the time or resources to do so.

One Good Cat Link: Cats have been around for millions of years, but the first Devon Rex was born less than 50 years ago. The Devon Rexponent is a blog devoted to the curly-coated cat. Among the talents this breed possesses is the ability (or at least, the willingness) to perform surgery…
One Video Link: “…I always wanted to be special. It’s like you know you have something inside you that’s gonna make you different than everybody else and make you somebody in this life, but you wish you could figure out what it is, because at most things, you’re either mediocre or really, really bad.” — Nellie McKay
On the other hand, twelve-year-old Akiane Kramarik has known for years she was born to paint. Just watch her…
One Other Link: A Tale of Two Cockies is a romance that begins in Australia, and tells the story of a one-winged female cockatoo and the male (the cock cockatoo?) who becomes her mate.

Going to college sometimes got in the way of my education, but at least once the two worked hand in hand. I read Thomas Wolfe’s “You Can’t Go Home Again” as an assignment for an American Literature class, and this excerpt has stayed with me ever since:
And great Goethe, accepting the inevitable truth that human growth does not proceed in a straight line to its goal, had compared the development and progress of mankind to the reelings of a drunken beggar on horseback.
What was important, perhaps, was not that the beggar was drunk and reeling, but that he was mounted on his horse, and, however unsteadily, was going somewhere.
I grew up near Lake Erie, which was probably the leading symbol of water pollution in America. Those of us who remember the pollution in the U.S. prior to the first Earth Day know that the work and dedication of a lot of people have made things better than they were.
They still have a long way to go, but they’re getting somewhere.
