What is a Good Cat?

Posted in Nicky, What is a Good Cat? at 7:30

After we turned off the lights to go to sleep, the scratching began.  One of the cats was sharpening its claws on the carpeted steps, and Pat immediately picked the most likely of the usual suspects.

”Nicky,” she began in a low, slow voice, “what are you doing?”

Except this time, Nicky was actually lying at the foot of the bed, and he answered, “Meooww?”  It sounded to us so much like someone protesting his innocence, the real carpet-scratching culprit got away while Pat apologized to the unjustly accused little black cat.

Nicky, our Gatito Perfecto, has been wronged, and a special guest sympathizes with him.

Simpsons Fever!!

Posted in This, that and the other at 20:45

Couldn’t resist the ego trip of being immortalized in Simpsons form over at SimpsonizeMe.com. Nice that the auto-Groening left out the gray hair… otherwise a remarkable likeness. The cat could resemble Nicky more than it does, but hey, the price was right…

Easy Like Sunday: Watercolor Caitie

Posted in Caitie, Cats at 16:34

For easy Sunday goodness, visit Diva Kitty, Cat Crossings, William, Henry Helton, and Samantha and Tigger.

Update: Probably should have titled it “Oil Portrait” instead of “Watercolor”. The filter in Photoshop (the oil filter?) made it look this way.

Proverb Meme

Posted in Cats at 20:15

It’s always nice when someone thinks of you to tag you for a meme. The Mosaic Cats did just that, on Wednesday this week.

(Yeah, Wednesday was 3 days ago… he said, cringing… I’ll try to do better the next time.)

The object is to write our own proverb, and a proverb is a simple and concrete saying popularly known and repeated, which expresses a truth, based on common sense or the practical experience of catkind.

Mosaic Cats Willie and Bianca came up with this:

There are only twenty-four hours in a nap.

Then, Sadie’s made me smile. Her favorite proverb:

Morris 5:37,38

“No one puts new clean litter into dirty old litter boxes, or else the new litter will touch the poo poo parts, and it will be stinky, and the clean litter will be skanky.
But new litter must be put into clean litter boxes, and both are good. No cat having scratched new litter immediately desires old, for he says, ‘The new is better.’ “

Do I hear an AMEN? Yea, verily…

Now, with another quote from the kitty Good Book, here’s what the Good Cats say:

Cat does not live by stinky goodness alone. Cat must also have Temptations. (Ham would be good too. And shrimp.)

If you haven’t already been tagged, please consider this your invitation to join in the fun!

Traditional Friday Cat Blogging: Nicky

Posted in Cats, Friday Cat Blogging, Nicky at 0:05

A few comments have noted how intent and serious Nicky looks here. I’ll tell you why he does: just behind him, cropped out of the photo, is Pat. When his Mama is around, Nicky is one intense guard cat. I don’t think you can call it instinct, but whether you call it attachment, call it devotion, or even call it love, if anyone or anything were to threaten Pat, regardless of how big they were, this little guy would do anything he could to stop them.

Here’s a tip of the Good Cats’ hats to A Byootaful Life, which is hosting Weekend Cat Blogging #112. It’s also the home of lady cat Puddy, who resembles our little Gatito Perfecto.

The Good Cats also welcome everyone who’s dropped by courtesy of the 175th Carnival of the Cats, which is being hosted by This, That & The Other Thing. It’s also the home of shy cat Indigo, who also resembles our little Gatito Perfecto.

Ground WHAT?!?

Posted in Cats, Lizzie at 0:04

Just around the cybercorner at “What a Good Cat!” this week is a true little story about Lizzie’s taste in food, along with the memory of a large marketing mistake by the makers of Whiskas cat food. The story’s over there, the screen printed proof is here:

Let’s enlarge that picture, shall we? Yes, there it is — proof that Whiskas used to sell a product named Ground Kitty Stew.

Oscar, Bandit, and Kelly

Posted in Cats, Kelly at 16:03

It’s about 4 p.m. our time, and I’m guessing most everyone who cares about cats has heard by now about Oscar, the so-called “Death Cat”.

This next isn’t quite the same, but Oscar’s story reminded me of when my brother-in-law Dan was dying of cancer a few years ago. My sister Yvonne told me one of the family’s cats, a lady tabby named Bandit, kept him company when he was bedridden. Dan was never a cat person, but Yvonne said this cat’s devotion (or whatever its motivation) meant a lot to him.

Speaking of devoted cats, when I woke up today, Kelly was on the bed next to me. I’d like to think he was not practicing to take Oscar’s job… but I rubbed his tummy, and he turned on the turbo-purr.

Too soon, I needed to get up for work, and began to take my hand away. Kelly reached out a Big Guy paw and draped it over my hand, so I stopped. Then he took his other front paw and nudged my hand a few inches to the right, and when it was in place he lowered his head onto it. “OK, human, enough tummy rub, now I want you to be my pillow.” (What a Good Cat he is!)
