Traditional Friday Cat Blogging: Miss Lizzie

Posted in Cats, Friday Cat Blogging, Lizzie at 0:05

Pat enjoyed watching the rebroadcast of Pride and Prejudice the past few Sunday nights.

That miniseries was first shown in 1995, just about the time we adopted a little torbie cat from Animals In Distress, and Pat named her after Jane Austen’s heroine Elizabeth Bennet. Willful and headstrong, the literary Lizzie was a good namesake for our Good Cat.

This is a photo of Miss Lizzie Bennet Cat that was taken early the next year (which was also a leap year), not long after she joined our family.

Thursday Meme (the short version)

Posted in This, that and the other at 7:30

Got drafts going on at the same time in 3 baseball leagues, and my copy of Baseball Prospectus 2008 just came in the mail yesterday, so there’s not much brainpower left over for a meme. (That rules out the Thursday Thirteen.)

Instead, via The Daily Meme, this is 3x Thursday:

3x Thursday: 02/28/y2k+8: Special Abilities

1. Do you have a green thumb? How so/not?

Nope. Getting my hands dirty has never been my idea of fun. If Pat needs help with her garden, I’ll do it, but after that I’m outta there. (And to the bathroom sink ASAP.)

2. What is your best skill/ability? Why?

In the past 10 years or so, I’ve become pretty good at reading instructions and learning from them. That’s come in mighty handy when doing computer-related things. Naturally, I’d rather have something that is designed so well that it’s possible to pick it up and use it without ever opening the manual, but if need be, I know how to learn something from reading help documents.

3. If someone asked a friend of yours, “Hey, what is one thing your friend is exceptional at?”, what would they say about you? Why?

The cliche is that older people have to ask their children (or grandchildren) how to use modern technology. I think Pat would say that does not apply to me. To name some specifics, I have learned to program the VCR (nope, no TiVo or other DVR yet); use the remote (or if necessary, the remotes); do online banking; set up a wireless router; fix moderately difficult computer hardware and software problems (and can walk her through fixing some over the phone); and I help her get the most out of the electronic gadgetry in her car.

OK, I’m going back to my baseball hobby now… yessir, sure is fun… and oh, the things I could tell you about the players I’m getting

Elementary!

Posted in This, that and the other at 14:16

It was noon, time to head home for lunch.

As I walked out of the building, I remembered there was a coupon in my wallet for a free sandwich from Chick-Fil-A. That always works out nice — Pat gets a day off from cooking and I get a free lunch.

But then I thought I should check to make sure she hadn’t already made something to eat. I called her while walking across the parking lot to my car.

The phone rang once, twice… then Pat picked up and said one word, and it wasn’t “Hello.”

“Chick-Fil-A?” she asked.

Did I ever tell you that in her youth Pat devoured Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie mysteries?

She sure learned something about using her own little grey cells…

Good Things: A 3-for-1 special

Caitie crouched behind the rock, then wiggled her hindquarters. I pointed the camera toward her, and she stopped her preparations and looked at me. No, little one, don’t stop now…

She re-focused, repeated her crouch-and-wiggle, and hopped over the rock with minimum effort. Hardly an inch between her legs and the stone. No need for more, and she knew it. The Calico Princess of Mid-air…

This is Caitie’s own safety dance, inspired by pesty little brother Nicky…

… which in turn inspires me to include the original one by Men Without Hats.

Now, if Colin Hay and Ivan Doroschuk had formed a band, they could have called it Men Without Work…

Man Cat Monday with Mr. Kelly

Posted in Cats, Kelly, Man Cat Monday at 0:05

Bright, chilly weather followed last Friday’s 4-inch snowfall, but that didn’t keep this Man Cat inside. However, when Kelly heard Pat making what we call “food noises”, which occur when she fills cat dishes with Good Cat food, the Big Guy charged up onto the deck and headed back inside on the double.
