Bill Gates Gets It, FWIW
Say what you will about Microsoft, call it “Evil Empire” or … well, I haven’t seen enough compliments to come up with the other side of that comparison, but this story reveals that Bill Gates understood what the rest of us were going through.
QUOTES: “This site is so slow it is unusable.”
“These 45 names are totally confusing. These names make stuff like: C:\Documents and Settings\billg\My Documents\My Pictures seem clear.”
And here’s my favorite one: Bill Gates wrote, “Then I did the scan. This took quite some time and I was told it was critical for me to download 17megs of stuff… just to get 6 things that are labeled in the SCARIEST possible way I had to download 17meg.
…Then it wanted to do an install. This took 6 minutes and the machine was so slow I couldn’t use it for anything else during this time. What the heck is going on during those 6 minutes? That is crazy.
Then it told me to reboot my machine. Why should I do that? I reboot every night — why should I reboot at that time?
So I did the reboot because it INSISTED on it.”
Exactly.
Of course, keep in mind that he wrote that in 2003, so while we know he understands, judging from the forced reboots we still have to do, he couldn’t do much about it either.

Oh man…..don’t even get us started on Vista. That half of an operating system makes NO sense. It actually forgot- that’s right it forgot how to use the wireless card because it was plugged in for a while. Don’t even get the Toy Man started………

Hmmm …
If I remember correctly, BG was chief software architect at the time. I don’t quite buy it. Too little, too late.
I’ve read elsewhere, if MS had done a few tweaks (nothing major) and a handful of security upgrades (again, nothing major) to Win98SE, it would have been a better OS than XP (and certainly Vista). The footprint on system resources would be much less. And, with a substantial amount of applications and drivers available for 95/98/98SE. Well, you get the picture.
