3 Good Things to Report

Posted in Cats, Good Ideas, The Good things in life, Winner of the Day at 0:05

  1.   Kimo and Sabi from Cat Banter have announced the beginning of their Jump and Shout Contest. (That’s a linking graphic over there in the sidebar.) Winners get fun prizes and for every participant, they will donate 50 cents to Cat Friends Helping Friends.

Here’s the Good Cats’ first entry, a photo taken by Pat’s son Jack close to 10 years ago, with one of the early digital cameras. Caitie was behind a window screen, but it reminds me of a picture taken off a TV screen:

  2.   Also in the sidebar is a new graphic promoting the upcoming BlogBlast For Peace. The Good Cats participated last year, and we’ll be doing it again this year on June 4.
  3.   Winner of the Day: Bonnie Underfoot and Victor Tabbycat’s human mom, who was out in the woods and rescued an oriole that was tangled and trapped in a tree.

10:30 a.m. update: The blog was down for a few hours this morning due to a “500 internal server error.” I did some quick searching and reading to try to learn how to fix it, but I suspect the problem was with the blog host, since everything was working fine last night.

Anyway, things are once more back to normal, and as a result I now know how to create an error page using cPanel. It’s like I always say: You don’t learn anything when everything goes right.

Winner of the Day

With a tip of the cap to J.P. McCarthy, who saluted winners every day for decades on WJR radio in Detroit, here’s a Good salute of our own — and it goes to Paul Maholm. The Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander deserves that honor for coming through in a no-win situation, namely, facing and retiring one-day Yankee Billy Crystal.

The matchup lasted 6 pitches, long enough to give the crowd a good show, long enough to give them just a little hope that the DH (”designated Hebrew”) might actually get on base. With the count 3 and 1, Maholm bore down and threw two tough, moving pitches that major league hitters would have had trouble with, let alone a game, willing, but overmatched Yankees fan.

I’m hoping Maholm does that a lot against real big leaguers this year — he’s on the roster of my San Jose Hackers and San Fernando Reds.

An official box score and video from MLB.com are here. I liked the report from the BBC, which used cricket terminology in reference to Crystal “opening the batting” rather than the standard baseball term “leadoff hitter.” Finally, as a public service, here’s a baseball “jargonbuster” from the BBC.
